Switching Your Vermont Registered Agent
Vermont registered agent representation, billed at $99 per year. Includes the office address on your filings, same-day scanning of legal mail, and reminders for state deadlines.
Changing your registered agent in Vermont takes one online filing and a $35 state fee. There is no paper form to chase down; the whole thing happens through the Secretary of State's online system, and it processes quickly. Here is everything you need to know.
Common Reasons Businesses Switch
Your address is exposed. If you currently serve as your own agent, your home or office address sits in the Secretary of State's public database. A professional service removes it.
Your current provider is expensive. Many agents charge $150 to $400 annually for the same core service we offer at $99/year.
Document handling is slow. If your current agent takes days to forward documents, you risk missing legal deadlines. We scan and send everything the same day it arrives.
You moved or went remote. If you no longer have a physical Vermont presence, you need a registered agent who does.
The Process: Four Steps
- Choose your new agent. Vermont's statute (11 V.S.A. § 4007) allows an individual Vermont resident, a domestic corporation, another LLC, or a foreign corporation or foreign LLC authorized in the state. Whoever it is needs a real Vermont street address. PO boxes and virtual offices do not count.
- File the Change of Registered Agent. Formally a Statement of Change, filed with the Secretary of State's Business Services Division. Vermont issues no numbered form for it; you submit through the state's online business portal. The filing names your entity, the old agent, the new agent, and the new registered office address.
- Pay the $35 state fee. Set by 11 V.S.A. § 4008, paid straight to the Secretary of State. If you have seen $25 quoted somewhere, that is the outdated figure. It is a one-time charge, separate from whatever your new agent bills for service.
- Verify the update. Once processed, run your entity through the Secretary of State's business search and confirm the new agent shows correctly.
